Good evening.
Instigating a Google search using the word 'Basingstoke' brought me here to this site, a most refreshing change from what one would expect to find about our misunderstood town. Although one or two articles here seem to support people's misconceptions of the town's image as a comedic archetype fit only for humorous prattle, on the whole, in my opinion, this website's done a reasonable job. Perhaps you could refer more to Macmillan publishers in Houndmills, whose significance in the literary world should not be ignored.
Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Emmanuel.

About 10/11 years ago, when I was living in Liphook, Hants, (I now live in Aberdeen) there was a radio jingle played on local radio which went along the lines of.... 'Basingstoke, It's a whole new shopping experience. Basingstoke it's a whole new way of life'. I've been searching for this for ages and was just wondering if anyone happened to have a copy, or know of anywhere I could obtain it.
Many thanks

...thank you for your industry and forethought in the creation of your web site. I have been in New Zealand for 19 years and plan to return to good old England next year. After much searching on the web I
decided that Basingstoke and environs would be the lucky recipients of our glorious selves. However, when trying to find photos and information to show my daughter how worthy the town was of our attention
I could find not a jot! Until I discovered your excellent site. That swayed the vote. So I thank you and hope that Basingstoke will appreciate (and not regret) having two extra (rather fine) souls to
entertain and house.

I was born in 'The Shrubbery' Basingstoke in 1960 - before the mass expansion for the london overspill. I lived first in Coles Yard (caravan site in Eastrop) then South Ham Road before moving to Chivers Close when New New South Ham was created in '66. My dad was born in Sherfield-upon-lodon. My maternal grandfather (Tiger)worked for British rail and used to take me to the livestock market near the station. When he retired he did 15+ years as a lollypop man in south ham. I am sure there were more pubs then - one on every corner !!

At 7 I moved to Bristol - a Basingstoke education put me top of the class in this big city. Fate put my husband and I together in Bristol (he was also Basingstoke / shrubbery born) - after a few years in the army we settled here with our 3 sons in 1988 (20 years after I left). Our Grandson was born here last year. We are very happy to have grown as a family at the same time as Basingstoke has grown as a town.

I hate to hear people 'Dis' my town. I suspect there is a strong link between the negative aspects and people who don't like it here. So, please bugger off if you don't like it here - and leave the rest of us to enjoy our history, diversity and bright future :-)

Have just visited Basingstoke for the first time since 1999 - and probably only the second time since 1977. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit, fairly impressed with Festival Place and took a real trip down memory lane by visiting my old haunts in Kempshott. Had the pleasure of seeing some old friends whom I haven't seen in almost 30 years! Even got to see a Dalek in Ottakers bookshop! Maybe I'm easily pleased, but I had a great time! I'll try not to leave it six years before I come back again... In the meantime, I shall continue to stay in touch with the town via this website!

There are some sinister and surreal facts about this town for sure. The Iran-Iraq monument detail made me grin, another fine British export to Saddam. Not forgetting tho the nice story about the
Basingstoke guy who tried to kill Pablo Escobar with a dodgy fighter jet, that's a goodun. I''ve also heard Oswald Mosely (British Fascist Party) liked to hang around Down Grange and the Brewer's Fayre/'Bernie' in his time. I believe some of his descendant's might still be regulars actually.

Still, these juicy details from history don't make for a decent town per se, I'm not pursuaded that Basingstoke is recognisably distinct from every other town in the South. I think the phrase "staying in is the new going out" was first uttered by someone who'd been to Liquids the night
before...
[nice one! - Ed.]

Still, the author should be praised for an interesting site! Cheers

left Basingstoke 12 years ago to go to University in Leeds. Although everyone seems to slate it, I always thought it was a great town, only ruined by some of the disaterous town planning and "some" of the small minded locals.
I visited earlier this year to find that the town has completely changed; the previous concrete theme is no more, which is great.
The real beauty of the town isn't the shopping centre (which I'm sure is lovely), but is the old town and the historical buildings which are hidden away from most visitors.
Although I know I'll never move back there, I do miss it.

I was born and bred in the town and moved away when I was 18. I must admit, there is a bit of a stigma attached to the place - I find people almost wince when you say you're from Basigstoke originally. People have heard negative things about the town and take then on board, even if they haven't visited the place! My family still live in and around the town so I'm back regularly. I love it - I'm proud to be from Basingstoke!
Great website!

Spent the first 17 years living in old basing, have nothing but fond memories of the town and the people i grew up with.
Lived in Cornwall now 25 years and to be honest wouldn't move back as the pace of life here suits me.
Still read the gazette every week and in a strange way still miss the place.
Excellent website will definately be coming back.
GOOD LUCK TO BASINGSTOKE AND ALL THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE LIVING THERE FOR THE FUTURE

I always say i wana get out but secretly i dont think its that bad. im moving in sep, and i'll probably miss it alittle. its not that bad... there are things to do and a new shopping centre. but why is basingstoke plagued with bad design? even with 300million to redesign the centre, they couldnt get it right. it has everything you need but just not anything special. it has nice parks, and if your board you can always take a train to london. you have to have some pride in your hometown. There are worse places to live arent there..?

comment Hi, I'm the webmaster of parkprewettoddfellows that you'll find listed in roundabout. I first set eyes on Basingstoke in the summer of 1962. I was down from Cheshire for an interview at Park Prewett Hospital. From then to 1977 I became a Basingstoke resident. I was married there, my children were born there and it was my first
independent home after leaving home. In the '60's of course it was a small market town with loads of pubs, winding lanes and streets throughout the town itself and plenty of green fields surrounding it. I visited it again in '81 for six months and then '99 for 2-3 weeks. For me the 'old Basingstoke" of my late teens will always be the best. I didn't like your 'spagetti junction', the disappearance of the Hampshire accent on the streets and I can't see it ever winning a good town design award! I feel a stranger now in the town I once lived in. But it still of course holds fond memories and long term friends who I have known since the '60's. Basingstoke has changed of course from a small rural Hampshire orientated town to a much larger and London-focused arena. It will be interesting to see how it changes again in the next 20 years!

comment Well, I'm an oldie - came to B'stoke in 1962. It was a small market town and just beginning to re-develop and of course has never stopped since! It was quiet and friendly in those days and had more pubs than it has now! All we had then was pubs, cinema (1) and dances at PPH (Park Prewett Hospital -see the new website on the basingstoke roundabout website). They were sleepy country days and the most common accent was the Hampshire Hog accent not the 'cockney one'! I re-visited in '99 after a 20 year absent and basically didn't like what I saw - bad planning and design - a town with no soul - just catering for the commuters. Yes for me Basingstoke has changed from a typical Hampshire village/town to a London suburb. if you want London suburbs - fine - if you want Hampshire villages and towns - you've blown it!!

comment After living in Basingstoke for 30 years, I'm just thankfull I'm not there anymore and now living up north as far away as I can afford! One of the main factors for me doing so, is that, after working in the retail business for a major DIY chain, I found that there is no one more arrogant, rude, sefish, short tempered, and down right so blunt as anyone coming from a town of this size. I'm now in Yorkshire and people up here are far more civilised and pleasant to deal with. I ashamed to be from Basingstoke.
I have to agree with an entry from Andy!, I'd bomb it if it wern't for family!.
And for all you people shopping in Homebase, Go easy on what little staff they have left, after all, it's thanks to you that we've all left due to your rudeness, arrogance, dis-respect and total lack of manners!!!!

comment I'm happy that at least one person has something good to say about the town I grew up in. I spent most of my 20s denying that I had  anything to do with the place. Even now when I'm visiting friends and relatives, I still feel that desparate sinking feeling as I see the AA Building appear on the horizon. But somehow The Fear is subsiding. Basingstoke isn't necessarily a bad place to live, but I doubt that I would keep coming back if most of my family didn't live there. I would probably feel the same way if I had grown up in Hemel Hempstead, Swindon, Slough or any of the other McTowns in the UK..

Well, I can't tell whether it's deserved or not; I can only tell that the taxi driver who was taking me to Basingstoke from Reading got lost at the first roundabout and literally "sold" me to a local driver so that I could reach my destination safe and sound. Probably he didn't want to mess with the Basingstoke hell. Anyway I must admit that I did like your town and the people I met. No, really!

comment I moved from Reading, and dreaded it. But it's growing on me fast, very fast. There's probably nowhere in the UK quite like it. Where else can you find a small market town with modern glass and steel buidlings right in the middle? Where else has pure chalk fed river with its source right in the town? Too many roads, but build houses on a few of them and it'll be the model modern metrop. Why no picture of Churchill Plaza? It's smack in the view down our street. I love it.

It's great to see the photos, and get the history...keep updating, I like to see how everything changes.

comment When we first came to the UK in 1998 I was offered a job in Basingstoke. People that hadn't been been there told me that it is a town you pass by, you don't even stop there. Well, we've swiftly moved on and bought a house here. Great website. I can also recommend http://www.saw.co.za for South African's living abroad.

comment Born AND Bred in Basinstoke, sometimes I love it sometimes I hate it, much better now than when I was a teenager, my children have so much more to do,but we live in south ham,I used to be able to walk anywhere without worrying about getting beat up. Now I don't like my teenagers walking about the streets when it's dark. I think thats really sad.

comment Finally Basingstoke has a scene for music lovers that are sick of shite club classics and bubblegum pop. The Rhu Bar and Drakes both on London Street feature live bands and a diverse mix of dJ orientated chunes, ie, funk/hip hop/soul/rare groove etc. Drakes have Sunday Sessions Live every other Sunday which has a late bar and some top LOCAL musicians/bands. We're not talking little college bands (although there are some good ones of this ilk) we're talking quality live music on your doorstep. Hurrah!

comment Is there any value in having a photo of the Civil Service Commission building, now that it has been razed to the ground by Barratts.
I'm told that the bunker will be an integral part of the new development.
Also, that was a good piece in the Gazette. More power to your elbow.
Best regards, Dougie.
[Judging by the number of other websites / publications etc. that have ripped this image it's an iconic view of the town, so it gets to stay until the new building goes up . . . and maybe even after that]

comment Hi Joe!
Saw the review in the Gazette and thought I'd drop in. Now my cover's blown running Basingstoke Nights is getting a little scary! Still, like you say it's certainly not a boring town, like the punk rock festival that was held at Drake's bar on April 14th. That was quite something. Watch out, you might appear on the Basingstoke Nights characters page!!!!

comment well lets talk about Basingstoke i must say after living there for near on 19 years (growing up there) it was a pit of hell, very very boring nothing to do...ever, so i moved away (to study, at Bolton) and NOW! they decide to build a huge (biggest in England) shopping centre, but despite this I don't believe this will improve the towns image, although i wish it would improve the towns image. so for now i'll shall stay up north were its much more intresting. from a Boringstokian living in the north

comment When I lived in Basingstoke as a child, we would often visit my family in East London. My Mum was offered a chance of moving there, and I was so excited. The thought of being an Eastender instead of a Carrot Cruncher was irresistable. After 19 years of being an Eastender, meeting with real East End villains and smack heads, I realised how much I missed Basingstoke! I have been living back here for about 4 years now, my children love it here, because they can play out on real grass and climb real trees and smell fresh air. Ok so Basingstoke isn't the hive of activity, but at least it isn't a one horse town either. Home is where the heart is and what you make of it.
P.S. I was in the same drama class as Tanita!

[Hey, the snow is a traditional thing . . . .  it's been there every year since the web site started, the snow gets switched on two weeks before Xmas and I get a load of complaints, the snow get switched off on the 1st Jan. comment I have lived in Basingstoke now for just over 3 years and bought an house in the area (Waltham Heights, Hatch Warren). My thoughts on Basingstoke change all the time depending on my mood. Sometimes I think it is OK, sometimes I think it is the pit of hell. But I often settle on the thought that if I REALLY thought it was that bad then I would have moved long ago. One of the big plus points is that it is near to places where there is more going on (Southampton, Reading, etc). I come from Bolton and have lived in Stoke-on-Trent for 3 years - believe me there are a lot worse places on this earth. Oh...but then again there are a lot better (you see there I go again). For the record, I probably intend staying her for about another 2/3 years and then move on - maybe England, maybe over in Austrailia. This site is good and one I would definetly look up wherever I might be.

comment People moan that there's not much to do in Basingstoke. Yet there's loads more pubs n clubs now compared to the late 80's, and I figure once the town has been redeveloped, there will be a lot more. Certainly hope so.
The only problem with Basingstoke is it's lack of history/culture/architecture (compared to places like Winchester, Oxford, Guildford etc), but I guess that's the problem with a newtown (Stevenage and Milton Keynes also have these problems). It also doesnt have enough diversity as far as music/clubs go. If you like dance music, chart music or cheezy 70's and 80's, then you're laughing, but if you like rap, metal, rock etc, you've got nowhere to go bar the occasional night at Bang Bar and Drakes.
Not enough good live music goes on at the Anvil either - hardly anything is aimed at people between the ages of 15 and 30. The only live bands are bands like Status Quo, or Bjorn Again.
